Scheduling: Open shifts and bidding
Objective. Post uncovered shifts to eligible employees and read bids and eligibility - understanding that a posted shift is an unfilled offer until it is claimed and published.
This screen answers: can uncovered shifts be offered to eligible employees to self-fill? The key read is that a posted open shift is an offer, not filled coverage - the gap closes only when an eligible employee claims it and it is published.

What this screen answers
A Sales or CSM person opens open shifts to answer: for a shortage we cannot cover from the core roster, can we offer the shift to eligible employees and let them claim or bid for it? It is a self-service lever for closing gaps fairly.
The task
For a shortage window, post the open shift to the eligible pool (gated by skill and rule), and review bids or claims. Confirm the claimant is eligible and that filling the shift does not break a rule, then carry it into the published schedule.
How to read it
A posted or open shift is an offer, not filled coverage - until it is claimed by an eligible employee and published, the shortage window is still open. Eligibility is skill- and rule-gated: posting a shift to a pool with the wrong skills or a rule conflict will not help. The misread to avoid: counting posted shifts as covered, or assuming anyone can take any shift.
Honest limits
This screen manages offers and claims; it does not guarantee a shift will be taken, nor does posting publish the schedule. Confirm with product how eligibility, bidding rules and auto-approval work for a customer, and how claimed shifts flow into publication; the demo uses seeded data.
Interpretation check
A posted open shift is an unfilled offer - coverage only closes when an eligible employee claims it and the schedule is published; eligibility is skill- and rule-gated.
In the field
A contact centre offering weekend peak shifts to cross-trained agents: open shifts fill the gap fairly, but the CSM stresses that an unclaimed post is still an open gap, not coverage.
Practical task
On the demo, post an open shift for one shortage window and write a one-line reading: the eligible pool, whether any claim closes the gap, and what still needs publishing.
Self-check
You have posted three open shifts for the peak. Is the peak covered?
No. They are offers. The gap closes only when eligible employees claim them and the schedule is published. Unclaimed posts cover nothing.
Why does posting a shift to the wrong pool not help?
Because eligibility is skill- and rule-gated. A shift offered to employees who lack the skill or would break a rule cannot validly be filled by them.
Does posting an open shift change the live schedule?
No. It creates an offer. The live schedule changes only when a claim is accepted and published.
