Work Understanding: Skill inference

Objective. Read inferred skills as AI suggestions with a confidence, use them to find coverage gaps worth confirming, and never present an inference as an HR rating of a person.

This screen infers which skills the observed work implies, so a leader can see likely strengths and gaps. It answers 'where might our skill coverage be thin?' - an inference to confirm with a human, not a performance verdict.

What this screen answers

The customer question is: based on the work people actually do, where does our skill coverage look strong or thin? Sales and CSM people open it to show that Time Champ can surface likely capability gaps - a process that only one or two people seem able to handle, or skills concentrated in a single team - from observed work rather than a self-reported skills matrix.

The value is a starting map for cross-training and resilience planning. The framing you must lead with: these are inferences from behaviour, not graded assessments of individuals.

The task

  1. Open the skill-inference screen from the overview.
  2. Scope to a team or process so the inference is comparable.
  3. Read it as a coverage view: which skills appear concentrated, which look thin, where a single point of failure may sit.
  4. For any inference you would act on, treat it as a prompt to confirm with the manager - 'the work suggests X; does that match what you see?'

Describe at the level of inferred coverage and confidence. Do not invent skill labels, scores or control names, and do not read a confidence number as product fact.

How to read it

An inferred skill is an AI suggestion carrying a confidence, not a measured competency. The classic and most damaging misread is treating it as a rating of a person - a reason to rank, reward or manage someone. It is not. It infers what the work implies, and observed work is shaped by what people are assigned, not only by what they can do.

Read low confidence as 'confirm before using'. Read a gap as 'a coverage risk worth checking', not as a verdict that no one has the skill - the person may simply not have done that work in the observed period.

Honest limits

This screen does not measure ability, potential, or performance, and must not feed an HR or compensation decision. Inference from assignment can be circular (people look skilled at what they are given), and coverage may be partial.

Confirm with product how skills are inferred, what confidence and coverage apply, and what the customer's governance permits this data to be used for. Position it as workforce-resilience planning input - cross-training and single-point-of-failure risk - validated by a human who knows the team, never as an individual scorecard.

Interpretation check

Inferred skills are AI suggestions with a confidence, to confirm with a manager and use for coverage planning - never a measured competency or an HR rating of a person.

In the field

In an RCM operation, inference that only two people handle a complex payer appeal is a resilience flag to validate and cross-train against - useful planning input, not a performance grade on those two people.

Practical task

On the demo skill-inference screen, scope to one team, identify one apparent coverage gap or single-point-of-failure risk, and write how you would confirm it with the manager before anyone acts on it.

Self-check

A manager wants to use the skill view to rank their team for bonuses. What do you advise?

Do not. Inferences are not measured competencies and are shaped by what work people were assigned. Using them for ranking or pay is outside what the data supports and likely outside permitted governance.

A skill shows as a gap. Does that prove nobody has it?

No. The person may not have done that work in the observed period, or coverage may be partial. It is a coverage risk to confirm with the manager, not a verdict on capability.

Why can skill inference be circular?

People look skilled at the work they are assigned, and assignment is not the same as ability or potential. Read the inference against that bias and confirm with someone who knows the team.

What is the legitimate use of this screen?

Workforce-resilience planning: spotting concentration and single points of failure to target cross-training, with human confirmation - not individual performance judgement.

Verified vs demo. Screen is live in the demo at /#/skills; exact controls, inference logic, confidence and figures are SME-validation-pending, and detection method and permitted use for a customer must be confirmed with product.
